Bout #1 (6 rounds) Mike Williams vs Willie Nelson Click here to see pics of this fight Willie Nelson not only is tall, he FIGHTS tall, using his height and reach to his definite advantage against Williams, who can't keep Nelson off of him. After a standing eight count and being dropped in the second round, the bell saves him from probably being knocked out. Some bleeding and dizziness in the corner prompts Williams' corner to call the fight off, keeping Nelson's undefeated record intact. (NELSON TKO 0:01 RD3)
Bout #2 (4 rounds) Nagy Aguilera vs Jeremiah Williams Click here to see pics of this fight Aguilera is trained by longtime heavyweight contender, Big Lou Savarese. This Dominican fighter has a ton of power and used his big overhand rights to open a nasty cut alongside the left eye of Williams during the second round. After being dropped early in round three, and after taking about 20 unanswered shots from Aguilera, the referee, Bill Paige, stops the action, keeping Aguilera undefeated, now up to 6-0 with 4 KO's. AGUILERA TKO 2:12 RD3
Bout #3 (6 rounds) Prenise Brewer vs Reggie Sanders Click here to see pics of this fight PJ Brewer fought a cagey veteran in Reggie Sanders, who likes to switch between southpaw and orthodox fighting. Brewer, who is a 2005 Golden Gloves champion and definitely fights like it,could easily pass as the third and youngest Peterson brother. He uses the entire ring to set up his two-handed attacks, and has no trouble shooting hard, strong uppercuts right through the "uprights" of Sanders' futile defense. Sanders looked like he may be staging an upset over the young prospect during the third round, where his switch-hitting seemed to confuse Brewer a bit, but rounds 4-6 swung back in Brewer's favor, as he fought to an easy unanimous decision. Bout #4 (4 rounds) Jason Cook vs Matt Short Click here to see pics of this fight What an odd fight. Matt Short stands straight up, throws long, straight uppercuts, and took a lot of good shots from LaPorte's Jason Cook. The problem is that he landed very rarely on Cook, and even started turning his back on his opponent in round 3. Bill Paige, the referee in this contest, was forced to stop the action in round 4 due to Short's unwillingness to stand and FACE his opponent, which unfortunately for Short, is a requirement of a pro boxing match. Jason Cook remains undefeated in a sloppy but hard-fought fight. COOK TKO4
Bout #5 (4 rounds) Ricardo Benavides vs Tramaine Towns Click here to see pics of this fight Tremaine "TNT" Towns got caught early, and "Little Ricky" Ricardo Benavides took full advantage, throwing a barrage of about ten unanswered shots, the last one being a big left hook to the temple of Towns, which sent him to the canvas. Towns, to his credit, got up at the count of seven, but referee Kurt Spivey wasn't convinced that Towns was able to continue, and stopped it. BENAVIDES TKO1
Bout #6 (6 rounds) Don Moore vs Randy Dodds Click here to see pics of this fight This was Don Moore's first fight under the canopy of Malcolm Garrett's Promotions. It was successful, but Dodds was able to get to Don a bit easier than most ringside observers were expecting. Still a slick boxer with deceivingly sharp punches, Don would be a tough challenge for any of the top ten lightweights out there. Nothing Dodds did really seemed to bother Moore, but judges were forced to give Dodds points due to some tough exchanges earlier in the fight. MOORE UNAN. DEC
Bout #7 (6 rounds) Cedric Agnew vs Mike Word Click here to see pics of this fight There is no doubt about it. Cedric Agnew is a star in the making. He used every inch of the ring in his total dismantling of Mike Word of Milwaukee. Word's chin kept him in the fight, as Agnew's assault kept coming from all angles and in all punch-forms. Hooks, uppercuts, straight shots. . . . they all landed. The Chicago fighter is expected to show us many great things in the upcoming months. He's young, looks like a star, and punches incredibly hard. Let's keep our eye on him, and see where he goes from here. AGNEW UNAN. DEC6
***Before we get to the main event, let me just set the stage a bit. The LaPorte Civic Auditorium is at near capacity, filled with enthusiastic fight fans. The smell of sweat, leather, and cigar smoke fills the air. For a "library type" who requires perfumy air and luxurious comfort, this might not be a comfortable place to hang out. But for the true fight fan, THIS is what boxing is supposed to be. No posh luxury suites, no frills. Just competitive fights and intense action. What else does a fan of the Sweet Science need?
Bout #8 (10 rounds) Nick Cook vs Marcus Oliveria Click here to see pics of this fight WHAT A FIGHT!!!! The tide turned constantly, with both fighters changing hats from counterpuncher to aggressor. Nick Cook, the local favorite, had the most success as an effective body attacker, but Marcus Oliveria landed the bigger, stronger shots. As far as number of rounds won, the concensus ringside was that Cook was slightly ahead after ten rounds. This fight was for the USBC Lightheavyweight Championship, and it did not disappoint the near-capacity house in LaPorte.
Initially, the ring announcer, Mr. Tom Treiber read the scores to reflect the winner as Nick Cook, making the LaPorte, IN, native the new champion. Treiber immediately announced a correction in the scorecards, stemming from a recording error, that the fight was actually a draw. The boos drowned out any explanation. . . .but you could almost tell there would be some drama since it took a full five minutes for officials to add up the scores. Let me be the first to say, REMATCH! DRAW 10
